SANDOVAL, IL — A smoke detector alerted a woman to a fire Wednesday in her Sandoval apartment, giving her time to escape safely with her two-year-old daughter.

A call about the fire in the two-story Marion County Housing Authority Duplex at 413 South Mulberry in Sandoval came in around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The fire appeared to have started in a bed in the upstairs unit and was confined to that one bedroom. The remainder of the second floor as well as the first floor received smoke damage. The State Fire Marshal’s responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Sandoval received mutual aid assistance on the scene from the Centralia Fire Protection District and Odin Firemen while Centralia Firemen stood by at their station in the event of another fire in the Sandoval District.

No injuries were reported in fighting the fire.
