MT. VERNON, IL — Sometime Tuesday afternoon an inmate of the Jefferson County Justice Center attempted to escape custody of law enforcement at the Jefferson County Courthouse and was shot.

WMIX/WDML has received unconfirmed reports that the inmate was 55-year-old Fredrick Goss of Mt. Vernon who is accused of Armed Robbery and Shooting at a Mt. Vernon police officer back in June. His trial was scheduled for jury selection today. Again, these are unconfirmed reports from citizens who were in the courthouse at the time of the shooting and on the street in the aftermath. These reports are not from law enforcement officials that were on scene.

The escapee was shot by law enforcement and taken to a local hospital for treatment. There has been no word on his/her status at this point.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Mt. Vernon Police Department, and Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate. We will bring you further, official, details from them as they are made available to us.
