DIX, IL — A four-vehicle injury crash happened Sunday afternoon on southbound I-57 at milepost 102 in Jefferson County.

According to Illinois State Police, 32-year-old Jeffery A. Pannell from De Queen, AR was driving a pickup truck north on I-57 as a SUV driven by 29-year-old Aric S. Karraker of Kankakee was driving north in front of Pannell. At the same time, a van driven by 72-year-old Danny E. Hoeinghaus of Kinmundy was going north in front of Karraker and another SUV driven by 57-year-old Tamara L. Westmoreland of Valparaiso, IN was traveling north in front of Hoeinghaus.

Northbound traffic was at a reduced speed due to the approaching construction zone with lane reduction. Karraker, Hoeinghaus and Westmoreland slowed down, but Pannell failed to slow down and struck Karraker’s vehicle in the rear. Karraker’s vehicle was pushed forward into Hoeinghaus’s vehicle. Hoeinghaus’s vehicle was pushed forward into the rear of Westmoreland’s vehicle. Karraker’s vehicle left the east side of the roadway, struck a guardrail face and overturned. Pannell’s vehicle left the west side of the roadway and struck a bridge support pillar.

Pannell was taken to an area hospital with injuries. Karraker and four passengers in his vehicle, 29-year-old Emily M. Karraker and three juveniles ages 2, 7 and 9, were also taken to an area hospital with injuries.

Hoeinghouse was not reported injured. Westmoreland and three juvenile passengers in her vehicle, ages 14, 9 and 8, were not reported injured.

Pannell was issued a citation for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
