WOODLAWN, IL — Friends and family of Shelby Mitchell are asking the public to join them during a car wash and school supply drive this Saturday, July 24th from 12-5pm both at the Woodlawn Grade School as well as the Huck’s on 10th & Veteran’s in Mt. Vernon.

The body of the 25-year-old Woodlawn native and teacher was recovered from floodwater Sunday morning after dive teams suspended their search the previous night due to unsafe conditions. Shelby went missing around 3:30 a.m. Saturday following reports that her vehicle left the road on Panzier Lane just south of Illinois Route 15 near Woodlawn and was believed to be submerged in water.

All proceeds from the benefit will be distributed to area schools in an effort to bless classrooms this upcoming school year. All supplies for students and teachers are welcomed and appreciated. If you cannot make the benefit but you’d still like to donate, you can contact Shelby’s older sister, Tiffany Phillips, at 513-9822. You can also contact Tiffany with any other questions or for more information.

The family will be collecting these items up until August 7th when they’ll do a final pick up that day.
