Eleanor Maxine (Modert) Meyers, born August 16, 1921 in Mount Vernon, Illinois, daughter of Eleanor (Davis) Modert and Dr. A.W. Modert, passed away at 4:50 am July 17, 2021 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon.

She married Kenneth Warner Meyers, the son of Rose Etta (Keef) Meyers and John Robert Meyers, on November 23, 1950 in Mount Vernon. He preceded her in death on August 23, 1972.She attended Mount Vernon Schools, Lindenwood College at Saint Charles, Missouri, and received her Registered Nursing Degree from Missouri Baptist Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. She had also attended SIU Carbondale.

Maxine was a First Lieutenant with the Army Nursing Corps in World War II, serving in the Philippines and Japan. Following her military service, she worked at Modert Clinic in Mount Vernon until retirement. Maxine joined the Daughters of the American Revolution in 2008, transferring to become a charter member of the Old Goshen Trail chapter in 2011. She was a cherished member and was honored with a birthday parade in 2020. She was also recognized during the DAR state and national conferences as a woman veteran. She was also a member of Central Christian Church in Mount Vernon, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Jefferson County H.C.E., Jefferson County Historical Society, and Jefferson County Genealogical Society. She was an avid traveler, reader, and she enjoyed flower gardening. Maxine loved her family.

Her surviving family members include her son, Jeff Meyers and wife, LaDonna of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Meg Lumpkins and husband, Rich of Bluford, Illinois, Becky Newlin and husband, Jeff of West York, Illinois, and Greg Payne of Bluford, Illinois; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Dr. Jean Modert and wife, Rita and Dr. Alson Modert and wife, Jo; sister, Rosemary Modert Holloway and husband, Lowell; and stepmother, Anna Mae Blessin.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, July 22, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home with Pastor Ronnie Mick officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Full Military Honors will be conducted at the cemetery the American Legion Post #141. Memorials may be made in Maxine’s honor to Central Christian Church or East Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
