MT. VERNON, IL —- The Mt. Vernon Police Department is investigating the shooting of two people over the weekend.

According to the police department, just after 4 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 1500 block of Cherry Street for a report of a person who had been shot.

Members of the Mt Vernon Fire Department and Litton’s Ambulance Service also responded and one person was transported from the scene to an area hospital.

Then around 4:22 a.m. Saturday, Mt Vernon Police Department Dispatch received a report from Good Samaritan Hospital of a second person who had a gunshot wound being at the hospital.

Mt Vernon Police Department Patrol Officers, Detectives and a Crime Scene Technician responded to investigate the incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate the two subjects were exchanging gunfire with each other when hit.

At this time, the department is not seeking any other suspects in this incident and no arrests have been made.

At the conclusion of the investigation the report will be forwarded to the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office for a review of possible charges.
