MT. VERNON, IL — A fitness examination has been requested in the case of a 30-year-old Mt. Vernon man charged in Jefferson County Court with the shooting death of his 48-year-old father last month.

Traviel C. Gibson is charged with three counts murder and one count Class 2 robbery in connection with the May 2020 shooting death of his father Sam J. Gibson.

According to police, around 12:19 p.m. on May 13th, a distraught female entered the Mt Vernon Police Department lobby and reported a male had possibly been shot at a residence in the 1800 block of Cherry in Mt Vernon. The female also reported a male at the residence had attacked her and stolen her phone.

Officers reported that as they arrived at the home, they saw Traviel C. Gibson run into the home. Officers also saw a dead man on the front porch of the home. Despite several commands from officers, Gibson refused to cooperate and exited the home. Officers ultimately entered the home to make contact with Gibson, who reportedly continued to resist officers resulting in one officer suffering minor injuries when taking him into custody.

Attorneys in the case filed a motion Monday requesting the defendant undergo a mental fitness examination. Bail was set at $3 million for Traviel Gibson and he remains in the Jefferson County Jail where he was taken after his arrest.

He’s next scheduled for a July 21st status hearing in the case.
