MT. VERNON — With area residents finding new, creative ways to celebrate birthdays and graduations this year, Ameren is warning residents that if those innovative celebrations include mylar balloons, don’t let them get away. They can be a major risk to the electrical system.

Mylar balloons are metallic and conduct electricity, which can result in surges and shorts that can cause significant damage to the power grid.

Kevin Young with Ameren Illinois says these balloons can cause significant power outages.

If you notice a balloon or another toy entangled in electric infrastructure, do not attempt to remove the object yourself. Call Ameren Illinois at 1-800-755-5000 so they can dispatch a crew to handle the problem.
