Imogene Phelps, 93, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, entered her Heavenly home at 12:05 am May 20, 2020 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was born October 13, 1926 in Jefferson County to the late George W. and Lena Elizabeth (Boyd) Minor. Imogene married her World War II Sweetheart, Floyd J. Phelps on April 14, 1946 and he preceded her in death on July 3, 2009.

Imogene is survived by her son, Stanley (Susan) Phelps of Fairfield; daughters, Rita (Roger) Williams of Bonnie and Cheryl (Fred) Tisdale of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Traci (Jason) Batson of Glen Carbon, Alison (Brandon) Storm of Edwardsville, Kristen (Matt) Cherry of Nolensville, Tennessee, Amber (Tony) Schweda of Bonnie, Alan Phelps of Davenport, Iowa, Bryan (Gennifer) Tisdale of Mount Vernon, and Tegan (Tyler) Gray of Bluford, Carey (Kandi) Warren of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Lesley (Tom) Tuton of Shorewood, Matthew (Claire) Warren of Glen Carbon; twenty-four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Phelps; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Imogene was preceded in death by her brothers, Marvin Minor, Bert Minor, Glenn Minor, Roy Minor, Maurice Minor, Carl “Abe” Minor; infant siblings; sisters, Beulah Samson, Edith Deem, Ruth Jackson, Beatrice Gnevo; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Imogene worked as a seamstress and was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Imogene enjoyed staying connected with family and friends on facebook. She always supported her family and everything they did. Imogene and Floyd enjoyed traveling with their good friends, Marvin and Freda Williams, together they traveled to all of the continental United States. She loved country music and playing pinochle with her family and friends. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting and donated many of her projects to family, friends, and various benefits. Imogene loved reading, doing puzzles, and learning. She enjoyed looking through her scrapbooks of World War II history. Imogene loved gardening, nature, working on her farm, and bird watching. She was famous for her coconut pies and at an older age she learned how to play the piano and composed her own music. She loved playing Wheel of Fortune and games with her friends at GreenTree. Imogene is dearly loved and will be missed by all her family and friends.

A Private Graveside Service will be held at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mount Vernon and a Public Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made in Imogene’s honor to Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
