MT. VERNON — Mt. Vernon Mayor John Lewis gave his annual state of the city address at the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon Thursday at the Doubletree in Mt. Vernon. Among the highlights of the happenings in Mt. Vernon include water and sewer improvements, the post office relocation, and the pressure Mt. Vernon and every community is facing because of state mandates.

Among the biggest events in the city in 2019 was “Water Crisis 2.0” when an unknown water leak spilled out over 7 million gallons of water over a week in late May. He told the crowd that not only during this leak, but 365 days a year, residents should appreciate the tireless work city employees put in for the community.

Lewis told the crowd that the city will continue to put the health and safety of residents as its top priority as leaders continue to tackle the city’s daily challenges.
