Bobby Smith was reportedly traveling eastbound on Interstate 64 at more than 101 miles per hour near the 61 mile marker in a vehicle that was reported by OnStar as being stolen from Granite City.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard, the pursuit started around 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. A short time later, OnStar stopped the 2019 Chevy Blazer Smith was driving at about the 94 mile marker on southbound Interstate 57.

Bullard says Smith was taken into custody by Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies with the assistance of Mt. Vernon police officers but that he resisted officers at that time and then again resisted when being searched at the Jefferson County Jail. When he was finally searched at the jail, deputies reportedly found Smith was hiding a handcuff key.

Smith was booked on charges of aggravated fleeing police at speeds exceeding 21 miles per hour over the limit, bringing a weapon or tool into a penal institution, possessing a stolen vehicle and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

Formal charges have not yet been filed in Jefferson County Court and bail has not yet been set.
