Godfrey firefighter killed while fighting blaze in Bethalto; 3 others injured

BETHALTO (RFD) — Tragedy in the Metro-East. A fire captain was killed, and three firefighters injured after a partial building collapse during a house fire in the Madison County town of Bethalto. Captain Jacob “Jake” Ringering of the Godfrey Fire Protection District suffered serious injuries when part of the building collapsed and he later died. Ringering was a native of nearby East Alton.

East Alton Mayor Joe Silkwood, a former St. Louis Cardinals farmhand, coached him over the years in baseball and said Ringering continued a family tradition.

Two firefighters have been treated and released while one is in stable condition at a St. Louis hospital. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal are investigating.
