CENTRALIA — A 60-year-old Centralia man was transferred Tuesday from SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of burns he suffered early that morning in a fire at his home in the 800 block of Arbor Lane.

A neighbor reportedly took Thomas K. Keeley to the Centralia hospital before an ambulance arrived at his home on the north side of Raccoon Lake. Keeley reportedly suffered from smoke inhalation and burns to his hands.

Fire officials say he told them a space heater caused the early morning fire. The Centralia Fire Department received the call of the fire at 4:07 a.m. Tuesday.

Multiple fire departments helped battle the blaze at Keeley’s home as temperatures hovered around 10-degrees.

Fire departments responded with tankers from the Centralia Fire Protection District, Sandoval, Odin, and Salem, with Kell firefighters responded to man the main Centralia fire station downtown.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to investigate the cause of the blaze which destroyed the home.
