JEFFERSON COUNTY — Bail was set at $500,000 Wednesday in Jefferson County court for a 39-year-old Mt. Vernon man recently extradited from the Vanderburgh County, Indiana Jail where he’s been held since December.

Victor Serrano was formally charged Wednesday with two counts attempted murder, one for a woman he allegedly abducted and one for her unborn child.

He was also charged with Class X felony aggravated kidnapping.

Serrano was arrested by Indiana authorities following a high speed chase with Indiana authorities. He had reportedly fled from Mt. Vernon, Illinois after he reportedly kidnapped a pregnant woman and caused her serious injuries.

The jail reportedly informed the court Wednesday that Serrano refused to leave his cell and attend a scheduled video advisement with court officials until he had an attorney present.

The court then appointed a public defender to represent the defendant and the advisement was rescheduled for Thursday in open court.
