JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 19-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been charged in Jefferson County court with multiple felonies after he was arrested following a brief pursuit with Mt. Vernon police.

Jamaro Kemmerling was reportedly wanted on an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant when officers attempted a traffic stop on his vehicle Wednesday.

Kemmerling reportedly fled and took officers on a brief pursuit on the south-side of town before he got his vehicle stuck in a yard. He then fled on foot a short distance before officers surrounded him and successfully took him in to custody.

A search of his vehicle reportedly revealed a firearm, which combined with his criminal history led to two Class X felony charges of armed violence being filed Friday, as well as Class 2 felony charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm with a prior conviction and possession of a converted firearm.

The alleged police pursuit led to two Class 4 felonies for aggravated fleeing police being filed against Kemmerling Friday morning.

In 2016 Kemmerling was sentenced in Jefferson County court to 4 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on charges of being a felon attempting to use possess a firearm and residential burglary.

He was released on parole in those cases in August 2018 and had apparently violated the terms of that parole, which led to the warrant for his arrest.
