JACKSON COUNTY  — Two 16-year-old boys were involved in a single-vehicle traffic crash Sunday afternoon in rural Murphysboro.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened just before 3 on Lake Road near Logan Run.

A preliminary investigation shows a white Chevy Sonic being driven by a 16-year-old male juvenile was going west on Lake Road just west of Logan Run when the vehicle failed to negotiate a left curve, left the roadway to the right, struck several trees and overturned. The initial responding deputy was able to use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire in the vehicle’s engine compartment before it spread to the rest of the vehicle.

The driver was able to climb out of the vehicle under his own power. The passenger was ejected from the vehicle. Both juveniles were taken to an area hospital for treatment. The passenger was later transferred to a St. Louis area hospital.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the crash.
