UNION COUNTY — A Chester man was indicted Wednesday on one count of first-degree murder in connection with the death of 53-year-old Jeffery A. Spicer of Murphysboro.

According to Union County State’s Attorney Tyler Edmonds and Union County Sheriff Scott Harvel, the charges against 48-year-old William P. Wasmund result from an extensive investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Spicer was found dead along the highway at 7625 State Route 3 North in rural Union County on Sept. 16, 2018. Wasmund is charged with setting a shotgun with a trigger set to fire when the door of a shed opened knowing that such act created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm to any person opening the door of the shed. The shed was located at the 7625 State Route 3 North property.

Wasmund was taken into custody early Wednesday morning at the Chester Police Department. He was scheduled to have his first court appearance today (Thursday) in Union County.

Wasmund is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bond.
