FRANKLIN COUNTY — The Franklin County Board Tuesday night unanimously approved an ordinance allowing the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to apply a vehicle impound fee to apply only to those involved in certain offenses.

A $125 fee would be applied in certain offenses like driving on a suspended license or DUI. It would not be applied to those who may have had an accident and need their vehicle towed.

Officials say the fee will go into the county’s general fund, but Sheriff David Bartoni says the money should cover the cost of installing computers in patrol cars, which would allow his deputies to run license plates and IDs. That’s according to WSIL-TV.

The ordinance is now in effect and the sheriff is expected to notify local towing companies about it.

The sheriff is expected to have the procedural process done around the first of February. It will include an appeal process for those who believe they should have not been fined.
