MT. VERNON — Southern Illinois is bracing for a winter storm Friday night into Saturday.

Trooper Byron Farthing with Illinois State Police District 13 says residents should stay home if possible, and if you have to travel anywhere, allow for extra time on the roads to get to your destination.

He also asks motorists to give road crews plenty of space on the roads as they work through the storm.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the entire listening area for Friday and Saturday. Snow totals will range between 3 and 8 inches across the area, with some locales further south also seeing a light glazing of ice with the snow.
