Arline Dare Howard passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, surrounded by her daughter, Nancy Jean Dare Germann, her son, Thomas Jerrell Dare, and other loved ones.

Arline Rose Hughey was born September 25, 1917, in Spring Garden, the daughter of Angus Millard Hughey and Eva Mae Cockrum Hughey. Arline grew up in Bonnie, IL, and married Francis Eugene Dare on May 26, 1934.

Arline always worked very hard. In 1940 Arline worked at the American Laundry in Mt. Vernon; she made $.11 an hour. Later Arline worked at the International Shoe Company in Mt. Vernon making $.23 an hour. Arline worked there for 34 years, until it closed in 1978. In early times Arline worked at the restaurant across the street from International Shoe on her lunch hour; at a Bonnie Restaurant, a Dareville grocery store, wall papering, sewing, hairdressing and caring for a special needs child for 17 years. At age 90 Arline was still caring for elderly friends part-time.

Arline was a very active person and was involved in many civic activities and organizations. Arline was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and SSM Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary. Arline was active in Eastern Star, becoming a Four-time Worthy Matron at the Belle Rive Eastern Star Chapter, a Worthy High Priestess eight times at the Mt. Vernon Chapter, and twice a Royal Matron in the Amaranth Court in Centralia. Arline earned a 50 year pin of the Order of the Eastern Star. Arline was the oldest member of the Central Christian Church. In 2007, Arline was inducted into the Jefferson County Senior Saints Hall of Fame.

Arline’s whirlwind of activities came to an abrupt halt when she suffered a stroke in November, 2015. Declining health issues ensued; Arline is now with the Angels.

Arline was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Eugene (“Red”). Arline is survived by her daughter, Nancy Jean Dare Germann, grandson Steven Wayne Warner and wife Rebecca of Mt. Vernon, great-grandchildren, Sara (Warner) Martin, husband David and great-great grandchild Jacob David; great-granddaughter Emily (Warner) Gutzler & husband Shane, and great-great grandchildren Brianna Rose and Bradyn Robert; great-granddaughter Rachel Warner; grandson William Bradley Wilson and wife Jennifer of Zeigler; great-granddaughter Kayley Brynn Wilson, and great-great-grandson Gavin Wilson of West Frankfort.

Arline is also survived by her son, Thomas Jerrell Dare and wife Ruth Ann of Haughton, LA, granddaughter Denise Donnell (Dare) Montequin and husband Jorge of Cedar Hill, TX, and great grandsons Matthew Alberto , Andrew Thomas, and twins Timothy Michael and David Stephen; grandson Thomas Jerrell Dare, Jr. and wife Kim of Gilbert, AZ, great-grandson Tyler Dare and wife Brittany of Utah, great-great-grandsons Caden and Malik; great-grandson Travis Dare and wife Stevie of Gilbert, AZ, great-great-grandson Sterling and great-great-granddaughter Henley, granddaughter DeAndrea (Dare) and husband Aaron Graham of Bedford, TX, great-great-grandson Anderson Maxwell (deceased), great-great granddaughter Maezey Deeann, and great-great-granddaughter Maura.

Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Friday. January 11th at the Johnston Funeral Home in Ina with Randy Sells & J. Howard Kraps officiating. Burial will be in the Kirk Cemetery in Ina. Visitation will be after 11:00 A.M. on Friday at the funeral home.
