MT. VERNON — A 26-year-old Mt. Vernon woman is in the Jefferson County Jail after she was allegedly caught in the process Tuesday of burglarizing the Rescue Mission Store.

According to Mt. Vernon Police, shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at the Rescue Mission Store in the 800 block South 10th Street.

Upon the officer’s arrival they observed forced entry to the business. Officers began searching the area for the suspect and made contact with Shantell L. Williams.

While officers were speaking with Williams, she reportedly attempted to flee on foot, but officers were able to take her into custody after a short foot pursuit.

After further investigation, Williams was charged with burglary and resisting arrest.

Williams was taken to the Jefferson County Jail where she remains awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
