Samuel Robert “Bob” Jones, 94, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 5:35 A.M. on December 15, 2018 at SSM Healthcare Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He was born on November 19, 1924, a son of Edward and Flora (Williams/Harlan) Jones. He married Tressie Louise Richardson on September 25, 1943 in Six Point, Texas, while he was serving in the US Navy during WW II. She preceded him in death on January 13, 2004.
Bob is survived by his children, Steve Jones and wife, Nancy of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Bobbie Sanders and husband Roger of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Cort Jones and wife, Lisa of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and Kerry Jones and wife, Tonya of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 13 precious grandchildren; Jennifer Melton and husband Farrin, Steve Kashycke and wife, Kendra, Devin Morgan and husband, Chad, Morgan Sexton and husband, Phillip, Chad Jones and wife, Becky, Jeremy Jones and wife, Paula, Jerrod Jones and wife, Kathy, Christopher Smith, Chassidy Winkler and husband, Todd, Joshua Jones, Charity Lantagne and husband, Shawn, Justin Jones, and Chase Jones and wife, Jill; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 1 sister, Lorene Edmondson of Carmi, Illinois; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Flora Jones; wife, Tressie Louise (Richardson) Jones; Son, Jerry Jones; grandson, Jason Jones; 3 brothers, Ed Jones, Dayton Harlan, and Phil Harlan; and 4 sisters, Maxine Flota, Edna Corner, Ruby Mick, and Hazel Goldman.
Bob was very musically talented and he used his many talents in Church Ministry to serve the Lord. He played the guitar, the harmonica, and sang for years in gospel groups. He began singing with the Fellowship Quartet, and later with the Jones Family, and spent nearly 60 years singing with the Prophets. He taught Sunday school, had a bus ministry, and also had a band in high school that performed at the Mt. Vernon Fairs. He loved his family and was very active in their lives. Bob loved nothing more than singing with his family in church.
Visitation: 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Funeral Service:11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Hughey Funeral Home with Reverend Merle Fullerton, Reverend Ron Reynolds, Reverend Jim Beaty, and Reverend David Shores officiating. Interment: Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois . Memorials: Gideon Bibles or to the Coram Deo Classical School.
