One injured Saturday morning in I-57 crash

MARION — One person was injured in a single vehicle accident around 7:30 Saturday morning on southbound I-57 near Marion.

According to Illinois State Police, 18-year-old Malachi D. Griffin of Hancock, Michigan, was driving south at milepost 47 on I-57 when his pickup truck traveled out of its lane of traffic into the median. The truck flipped end over end several times before coming to rest in the northbound lanes of traffic.

Griffin was ejected from the truck. He suffered incapacitating injuries and was airlifted from the scene to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

ISP says the cause of the crash was improper lane usage. The crash remains under investigation.

ISP was assisted by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and Lake of Egypt Fire and Rescue.
