MAKANDA — A crash involving a train and a car happened Friday evening in Jackson County.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 5:50 p.m. on Makanda Road in downtown Makanda when at SUV driven by 61-year-old Julie Walker stopped for the activated crossing gates at the railroad crossing. After the SUV came to a stop, it began moving forward and struck the southbound train. The SUV along with the crossing gates were damaged in the crash.

Walker was not hurt. Her vehicle was towed from the scene.

The crash is still being investigated by the sheriff’s office. Jackson County deputies were assisted at the scene by Jackson County Ambulance and the Makanda Township Fire Department.
