JACKSON COUNTY — A Mound City man was sentenced Monday in Jackson County Court for violating conditions of his probation.

Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr says 49-year-old Dennis E. Jones, Sr. originally pled guilty to the charges of aggravated battery and threatening a police officer, both of which are Class 3 felonies, and was placed on 30 months’ probation.

A Petition to Revoke his probation was filed when he did not comply with the terms as ordered.

Jones admitted to the violations and was resentenced to serve six years in state prison for each offense. The sentences will run concurrently with each other and will be followed by a one-year period of mandatory supervised release upon his release from prison.

The original charges arose from an incident that happened on Sept. 30 of last year when a Carbondale Police officer was sent to an area on North Washington Street in Carbondale for a report of a battery in progress. The victim reported that he was sitting on a park bench when an unknown man approached him from behind and began striking him in his face. The victim was able to point out the defendant as the suspect and eyewitnesses corroborated his account. While the defendant was being transported to jail, he threatened to shoot and kill the officers when he was released from jail.

The Carbondale Police Department conducted the investigation of this case. Assistant State’s Attorney Penny J. Pierson was responsible for the prosecution of this case.
