JACKSON COUNTY — A Carbondale man has been sentenced in Jackson County for unlawful use of weapons by a felon.

Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr said Tuesday that 24-year-old Demarcus O. Jones pled guilty Monday to the charge, which is a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to 30 months in state prison followed by a one-year period of mandatory supervised release.

Carr says during the early morning hours of Aug. 25 of this year, Carbondale Police officers stopped a vehicle in which Jones was a passenger in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane. A K-9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics. A female driver and four other male occupants were detained pending investigation.

A search of the vehicle revealed three loaded handguns and narcotics. A loaded .38 semi-automatic handgun was located under the front passenger seat where Jones had been sitting. A search of Jones revealed an additional fully loaded extended .38 magazine, consistent with the handgun. Jones has a previous felony conviction for burglary.

The investigation was conducted by the Carbondale Police Department. Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew W. Suthard was responsible for the prosecution of this case.
