Rev. Roger D. Tate, 83, of Texico, passed away at 4:40 p.m., Thursday, November 22, 2018, at Salem Township Hospital, in Salem.
He was born February 8, 1935, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Herbert and Verna Mae (McKinney) Tate. On January 6, 1958, in Bremerton, Washington, he married Donna Alm, and she survives him in Texico.
Rev. Tate served as a pastor for 45 years, after earning his Bachelor’s degree in Theological Seminary. He graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1954, and was a Hall of Famer for Football in 1952. He served in the United States Navy, and went on the Honor Flight in October 2017.He also worked as an auctioneer and a fireman, and was the Chaplain for Crossroads Hospital.
In addition to his wife, Donna Tate of Texico, he is survived by one son, Rheld Tate and wife Lori; three daughters, Rhonda Engler and husband Mark, Rhenda Forcum, and Rhenetta Tate; eight grandchildren, Christie Tate, Robin Rockel and husband Jed, Misty Besancon and husband Chad, Steve Forcum and wife Andrea, Jillian Mankey and husband Mark, Nichlaus Forcum and wife Nicole, Cheyne Newberry and wife Cassie, Brittany Newberry; fourteen great-grandchildren, Flora Rockel, Elliott Rockel, Hunter Besancon, Ethan Besancon, Hayley Hann, Evalyn Forcum, Cole Forcum, Emma Forcum, Sophia Forcum, Mikayla Newberry, Logan Newberry, Jack Price, Brooks Price, and Riley Price; one brother, Ted Tate; extended family, Steve and Leslie Capps, and their children, (grandchildren) Alisha and Andrew; and loving and caring caregivers, R.D. and Tammy Mandell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Gary Paul Newberry, Jr.; one great-grandson, Braylon Besancon; and two brothers, Brad and Jim Tate.
Funeral services for Rev. Tate will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, with Steve Capps, Cheyne Newberry, and Rheld Tate officiating. Burial will follow at Union Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 25, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
