MT. VERNON — A brief search Tuesday afternoon by Mt. Vernon police and their K-9 unit resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old Mt. Vernon male after he apparently fled on foot from security at Kroger’s grocery store.

According to police, Darius Swahn was taken into custody without incident after he was located in a wooded area south of Newell Funeral Home.

Officers began searching for Swahn around 2:52 p.m. Tuesday when they received a report of a shoplifter who had fled from security at the Kroger store in the 400 block of South 42nd Street.

Officers established a perimeter around the area. Mt Vernon Police K9 team and a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy began a search of the wooded area.

It was determined Swahn also had a parole violation warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

He was charged with retail theft and parole violation. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he is held without bond. He will be returned to the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections.
