JACKSON COUNTY — A Kansas man pled guilty Tuesday in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges related to the July 31, 2016 shooting of Carbondale Police Office Trey Harris.

According to the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s office, 24-year-old Alex B. Karcher of Salina, Kansas, entered an open plea of guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver more than 5,000 games of a substance containing cannabis, aggravated battery to a police officer, and aggravated discharges of a firearm. Other counts against Karcher involving shots fired at the police car were dismissed considering the defendant’s plea.

Karcher admitted in court Tuesday that he fired the gun that hit Harris’ patrol car several times during a chase with one of those shots injuring Harris in the eye. Karcher also admitted that he and several others came to Carbondale to collect on a debt for a previous drug deal.

Karcher is currently being held without bond in the Jackson County Jail. A sentencing hearing has not been set.
