CARTERVILLE — Carterville residents will be paying more in property taxes to the city in 2019.

The Carterville City Council Tuesday night voted 7 to 1 to increase property taxes by 30 percent. The increase will take effect on 2019 taxes according to WSIL-TV.

The increase is expected to help fund police and fire pensions in the city as the state is requiring all municipalities with these pensions to be 90 percent funded by 2045.

City leaders told those in attendance that if anyone is still opposed to the increase, they should contact their congressman and tell them about the increase.
