CARBONDALE — Westbound Route 13 in the University Avenue area of Carbondale was shut down for a few hours yesterday morning due to a fire at an apartment building located across from Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Carbondale firefighters were called in to battle the blaze. Fire officials told WSIL-TV the fire started in a downstairs apartment in the back of the building but quickly spread because of old construction techniques. The home was built in 1881 and had been turned into apartments with eight different units.

All tenants made it out safely. The cause of the fire is not known at this time and is under investigation, but tenants say a pan was left on the stove.

The landlord told tenants they would be moved into a nearby apartment complex with openings.
