CARBONDALE — Two Marion residents are facing several charges stemming from an unlawful use of weapons investigation in Carbondale.

Carbondale Police around 1:50 Wednesday afternoon, Best Buy employees witnessed 19-year-old Destinee M. Johns and 20-year-old Lemont Brinson conceal over $200 of merchandise. The couple left the store without paying. Employees confronted the two, who fled the scene in their vehicle.

Then just after 2:50 p.m., a caller near Dollar General at the intersection of Giant City Road and East Walnut indicated that someone had just pointed at handgun at them and reported the same vehicle and suspect description as that of the Best Buy suspects.

Within minutes, officers located this vehicle at East Walnut and Giant City Road and took Johns and Brinson into custody. An infant child was present in the vehicle. A handgun was recovered from the vehicle, along with stolen merchandise from Best Buy, as well as narcotics.

Brinson was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, resisting a police officer, possession of a controlled substance, endangering the life/health of a child, felony retail theft and disorderly conduct. He was lodged in the Jackson County jail.

Johns was charged with retail theft and endangering the life/health of a child. She posted bond and was released.

There were no injuries as a result of this incident. The infant child was released to family after consulting with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
