Explosion heard near Salem area grade schools Friday deemed no threat

SALEM — School administrators are praising the response Friday by Salem police when a report of a gunshot in the area led to Hawthorn and Franklin Park schools being placed on lock-down.

According to reports, around noon Friday, members of the school staff reported hearing a gunshot in the area. Police were notified and both schools were placed on “soft lock-down” and all students were brought inside.

An investigation into the report the sound came from an item exploding in a nearby burn pile and that there was no threat.
