WILLIAMSON COUNTY — A Carterville man was recently sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to residential burglary – a Class 1 felony, resisting arrest – a Class A misdemeanor and domestic battery – also a Class A misdemeanor – stemming from an incident were he broke into a home in Carterville and resisted arrest by police when they arrived on July 3 of this year.

Williamson County State’s Attorney Brandon Zanotti says the burglary and resisting arrest convictions against 28-year-old Montez Avant stem from the July incident in Carterville. The domestic battery conviction stems from a February 26, 2018 incident where Avant punched a household member in the mouth on Feb. 26 of this year.

Zanotti says Avant has a criminal history, including cases from 2007 to 2010 where he was convicted of robbery and delivery of cocaine.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and the Carterville Police Department handled the investigation.
