MT. CARMEL — Authorities have not yet released any information regarding a possible identification of human remains found last week in a field in Southern Illinois.

A Wabash County Illinois farmer was mowing last week when he reportedly spotted something that looked like a human skull with leathery skin and some hair. Authorities confirmed Friday that the remains found north of Mt. Carmel are human.

Illinois State Police Crime Scene investigators were on scene last week and were processing the area for evidence.

Two cadaver dogs from Indiana scouted the area in search of additional remains that may have been scattered. Authorities say it’s too early to tell how long the remains had been there.
