BENTON — Two people were injured in a multi-vehicle accident Saturday night on southbound I-57 in Benton.

According to Illinois State Police, around 8:30 p.m., a pickup truck driven by 47-year-old Randy A. Pansing of Metropolis, a car driven by 54-year-old Brenda G. Ray of Trussville, Alabama, and another pickup truck pulling a livestock trailer driven by 71-year-old J. Scott Harrison of Gulf Breeze, Florida were traveling south on I-57 at mile post 73 when Ray and Harrison slowed traffic causing Pansing to strike the rear of Ray’s car. The force of the impact caused Ray’s car to strike the rear of the trailer Harrison was pulling.

Pansing was not injured, but a 15-year-old minor child from Metropolis who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Franklin Hospital in Benton. Ray sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Franklin Hospital. Her passenger, 52-year-old David P. Ray of Trussville, Alabama, was not injured. Harrison was not injured.

Everyone involved was wearing seat belts. ISP says the cause of the crash was failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
