MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon City Council approved bids for demolition of multiple properties in the city and for road work on Davidson Avenue on the west side of the city at Monday night’s meeting.

The council approved the lowest bid submitted by Heck’s Excavating to raze the 14 structures on 13 properties in the city for a cost of about $52,000. The properties are about half of what the city has budgeted for this year and there are about 15 more properties the city would like to tear down this fall if the weather holds out.

Also approved Monday night was the lowest bid from Rolley Excavating to perform road work on Davidson Avenue between the two truck stops on the west side of Mt. Vernon. City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel told the council that patch work had been done in the past to keep the road passable, but it’s time for the full project to be done and not just patch the issues in the road again.

The council will meet again on Monday, November 5th at 7 p.m. at the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building at Veteran’s Park.
