CLINTON COUNTY — The federal case against a 25-year-old Keyesport man accused with the illegal possession of a machine gun has been postponed until early next year.

Kyle Matthews is charged in federal court with illegal possession of a machine gun described as a 9 mm Mark II Sten-type gun and with possessing an unregistered firearm silencer and possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle described as an Anderson AM15 semiautomatic rifle.

A federal judge Wednesday approved a defense motion to continue Matthews’ case until a February 19, 2019, trial.

According to court documents, discovery is ongoing in the case and additional time is needed to determine whether a plea agreement can be reached.

As the delay is due to a defense request, it will not count against the speedy trial clock

Matthews was initially arrested in April 2018 by Clinton County authorities for allegedly possessing a bomb and possessing a silencer-type device for a firearm.

Following Matthews’ arrest in April, the Clinton County Sheriff’s reported having received several reports of explosions near Matthews’ home in the weeks leading up to his arrest.

A search of his home reportedly revealed bomb-making materials and components, along with firearms and ammunition.

Matthews remains in federal custody.
