JEFFERSON COUNTY — A two-vehicle crash on I-57 just north of Mt. Vernon sent three to the hospital Wednesday night.

According to Illinois State Police, just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, a vehicle driven by 71-year-old Robert M. Bell of Vandalia was parked on the right shoulder of I-57 northbound at mile marker 97 facing the wrong way. Bell attempted to merge into the right lane and turn around when a GMC driven by 74-year-old Thomas J. Deien of Centralia struck Bell’s vehicle as he attempted to turn around.

Deien was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital before being airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital with major injuries. Deien’s passenger, 58-year-old Brenda K. Deien was also transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with major injuries. Bell was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with minor injuries.

All individuals were wearing seat belts. Charges in regards to the crash are pending.
