MT. VERNON — Residents of the city of Mt. Vernon should know they are allowed to burn leaves Monday through Sunday during the second full week of October. A leaf burning fire is permitted between the hours of sunrise and sunset until October 14.

Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sargent said in a press release that no burning can occur on any public street or sidewalk, draining ditch within the public rightaway or manhole cover, or on the property of another without written permission.

All types of fires must be physically attended by someone at least 18-years-old at all times.

Sargent says burning of any kind may be prohibited during any permitted leaf burning period by his order due to high winds, dry conditions, or other factors.
