ILLINOIS (IRN) — To the surprise of no one, Illinois’ Top 200 voters have picked Michael Jordan as the state’s top athlete of the bicentennial.
Apparently, even in 2018, a lot of people want to be like Mike.
Illinois’ bicentennial best of voters last week picked Michael Jordan as the best athlete of the past two centuries.
Chris Wills with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library said Jordan was the obvious choice on a list of outstanding athletes.
“He had such an incredible run in Chicago in the 90s,” Wills said. “He was an incredible figure worldwide, really, so the fact that he would come out on top of this list of top Illinois athletes makes perfect sense.”
Dick Butkus, Walter Payton, Ernie Banks and Jackie Joyner-Kersee rounded out the top 5.
“When you have athletes like Frank Thomas and Isaiah Thomas – football and basketball legends, who don’t even make the top 10 – that tells you something about the depth of the depth of the athletic line-up in Illinois,” Wills said.
Voters are picking the state’s most influential women this week.
