MT. VERNON — Mt. Vernon police arrested a 19-year-old man on burglary and firearms charges after he was reportedly found walking with weapons taken from a home a short time earlier.

Just after 11 a.m., a Mt. Vernon officer on routine patrol reportedly noticed Darin Carpenter walking in the 700 block of Perkins. Carpenter was reportedly carrying a long item wrapped in a sheet possibly a long gun.

The officer made contact with Carpenter and, after a short conversation, Carpenter dropped ammunition and began to flee on foot. The officer was able to take Carpenter into custody after a short foot pursuit.

The officer discovered Carpenter was in possession of a shotgun, a rifle, ammunition magazines and ammunition for both.

After further investigation, officers determined a residence in the 1000 block of Shawnee had been burglarized and the weapons and ammunition were stolen during the burglary.

Carpenter was transported to the Jefferson County Justice Center on charges of Possession of Stolen Firearms, Residential Burglary, Theft Over $500, No Valid FOID Card, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Resisting Arrest.

Carpenter was taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he remains awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
