FAYETTE COUNTY — Fayette County prosecutors are trying to have a 47-year-old convicted sex offender committed as a sexually violent person as his parole date is just days away.

Billy Speagle was sentenced in 2013 in Fayette County to 7-years in prison for a engaging in sex acts with a girl when she was younger than 13. Investigators later found child pornography on Speagle’s computer, leading to that charge being added to the case.

On Monday, the Fayette County State’s Attorney filed a case to have Speagle committed as a sexually violent person. He’s scheduled to be paroled Friday from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Speagle is also serving time on an Effingham County conviction for engaging in intercourse with a woman whose mental disability meant she couldn’t consent. He was sentenced to 7-years in that case.

Years earlier in Coles County, Speagle was accused of molesting two girls but was found not guilty at a trial in 2009 after he had already pleaded guilty.

He served prison time before an appellate court overturned his conviction and he was then acquitted after he opted to go to trial on the charges.
