EDWARDS COUNTY — A 40-year-old Oklahoma City was found dead Monday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a nearly 11 hour standoff with law enforcement at an Edwards County motel.

According to the Illinois State Police, they responded with Edwards County Sheriff’s deputies around 3 a.m. Monday to conduct a welfare check on Cory Hicks at the Albion Motel.

When ISP Troopers and an Edwards County deputy knocked on the motel room door, and Hicks answered the door holding a firearm and threatening to harm himself. Hicks then proceeded to withdraw back into the motel room and closed the door.

The ISP and Edwards County officers on scene secured the area and requested additional resources. ISP SWAT and ISP Crisis Negotiators responded to the area.

The Crisis Negotiators spoke with Hicks throughout the day, but at approximately 1:50 p.m., Hicks was discovered deceased in the motel room from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Edwards County Coroner pronounced him deceased at the scene.
