More details have been released on a crash Thursday night between a car and a semi on U.S. 51 at Britt Road in Patoka.

According to the Illinois State Police, a car driven by 35-year-old Max Maxfield, of Kentucky, was traveling northbound when he crossed into the southbound lane.

The 60-year-old driver of a semi, Dwight Snyder, of Sandoval, took evasive action and swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid being struck by the car.

Both vehicles, however, struck each other on the passenger sides, causing Maxfield’s car to also strike a southbound guardrail before coming to a stop.

The semi swerved back to the right following the collision and left the west side of the roadway.

Maxfield’s vehicle was extensively damage. He was extricated from the vehicle and was then airlifted from the scene to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment.

Snyder was taken by ambulance to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia for treatment of injuries.

The highway was closed to both northbound and southbound traffic to allow for the safe landing of the medical helicopter and for the investigation and cleanup of the crash scene. Motorists were detoured onto the old highway through Patoka.
