58th district IL Senator attends hearing to discuss Legionnaire’s outbreak at Qunicy Vets home

State lawmakers held a hearing on the legionnaire’s disease outbreak at the Quincy veterans home.

Legislators are questioning state officials about the how, what and when of the deadly outbreak that has killed 13 people since 2015. They’re also looking at solutions to prevent more deaths such as moving residents, which Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs director Erica Jeffries poses problems, especially for those with dementia.

Governor Bruce Rauner has spent the last several days at the Quincy veterans home and plans to share his experience.

Senator Christina Castro of Elgin says she wants answers.

Officials say they are following all of the water treatment protocols outlined by the c-d-c and continue to look at other solutions.

58th Illinois District Senator Paul Schimpf had two major takeaways from the discussions.

Seantor Schimpf says the problem needs to be solved and the home should stay operating.

Options to fix the problem are being discussed like fixing the plumbing which is an upwards of 25 million dollars plus or moving the residents.
