Bail has been set at $200,000 for a 40-year-old Vandalia man arrested Monday night by Vandalia police on multiple felony charges.

Clifton L. Smith IV was formally charged Tuesday in Fayette County Court with armed violence and aggravated delivery of between 5 and 15 grams of methamphetamine from a protected vehicle or structure. Both counts are Class X felonies punishable by between 6 and 30 years in prison if convicted.

Smith was also charged in court with Class 2 felony possession of less than 15 grams of meth, Class 3 felony being a felon in possession of a firearm, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a hypodermic syringe.

Smith’s arrest came as the result of a traffic stop, reportedly for expired registration.

The case is scheduled for January 24, first appearance hearing with Smith’s court appointed attorney.

Smith requested a public defender be appointed to represent him.

It is possible that Smith could have to reimburse the county for the cost of that representation.
