The Illinois department of transportation is looking at new approaches to maintaining and improving the state’s transportation system.

IDOT Secretary Randy Blankenhorn says the state needs to stop patching up holes and doing short term fixes based on the latest capital budget passed.

Blankenhorn says they want to take advantage of public-private partnerships to help pay for projects and using design-build teams to cut costs.
