A 46-year-old Mt. Vernon man was arrested Tuesday for alleged burglary and possession of meth, after he allegedly entered a neighbor’s shed and took items.

According to Mt. Vernon police, William R. Haynes was arrested after officers responded to North Sixth on a report of a suspicious person, a damaged fence, and shed that had been entered and items missing.

Officers reportedly made contact with Haynes in the area and he matched the description of the suspicious person.

A search of Haynes reportedly revealed burglary tools, items matching those reportedly taken from the shed, and less than five grams of methamphetamine.

Haynes was formally charged Wednesday in Jefferson County Court with Class 2 felony burglary and Class 3 felony possession of less than 5-grams of meth.

He’s scheduled for a first appearance on the charges January 17 with his court appointed attorney.
