A Johnston City man was sentenced to three years in state prison after pleading guilty on a burglary charge in Jackson County Court Tuesday.

Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr says 27-year-old Joshua Hewlett will also serve a two year period of mandatory supervised released upon his release from prison.

Carr says back in October, Hewlett stole a purse and cell phone from a vehicle parked on High Street in Carbondale. Police were able to use the phone’s tracking device to track the phone to locate a vehicle traveling on I-57 in Marion.

Hewlett, who was one of the occupants in the vehicle, admitted that he had taken the property. He also used the victim’s debit card which was contained in her purse. Hewlett provided the location of the purse which was later recovered.
